—Holding polluters accountable: In a decision that put major polluters on notice, New York will fine fossil fuel companies $75 billion over 25 years. The law is modeled on the original Superfund law of 1980, and shifts some of the costs associated with the climate crisis from the taxpayers to oil, gas, and coal companies liable for greenhouse gas emissions.
