Spotlight: Janet (“JJ) Jarvits

Janet grew up in Key Center just outside the beautiful region of Gig Harbor, Washington. She loved books, as her mother taught reading, and developed a passion for food in part from her Norwegian grandparents, both of whom cooked very well. JJ recalls a favorite dish of her grandmother’s, homemade strawberry jam from fresh fruit on delicious out-of-the-oven Parker House rolls. JJ grew up to own her own cookbook store, a treasure trove of cookbooks from multiple countries and time periods. “I didn’t think books and cooking went together or that I’d make money off either one,” she states humorously.
Janet is also an elite athlete, and is often seen running, biking, and swimming in the Pasadena area and global competitions. She enjoyed swimming on her high school team and held the school district record for the 2-mile run for 30 years. She took up biking and her ability as a triathlete came into being.
In addition to cherishing the life-long friends she has made, JJ also values her precious four-legged companions, Joey the dog, and Emma Jean the kitty. Janet is often seen working, tabling at the Pasadena City College swap meet, and traveling with little dog Joey. He is so little that he fits in JJ’s backpack easily!
JJ fondly recalls a wonderful experience while swimming in Redondo Beach one morning. “It was a very warm summer and the water temperature was in the 70’s, so warm I felt like I never wanted to get out. The morning sun was lower in the sky and really bright. I was aware of all the animals in the sand and swimming around me. I felt like I was in harmony with the whole universe.”
Thank you, JJ, for this beautiful glimpse of creation. If you’re looking for a particular cookbook or cooking genre, email Janet at cookbookjj@gmail.com.
